A small group of Breakers made the journey to the Mid North Coast town of Forster to participate in the 29th annual NSW Club Championships - the last race of the season and a battle of club against club. We were greeted by hail, thunder and torrential rain as experienced over the last few years. It wasn't looking good for the new event managers H Events nor the competitors.
Sadly most of our regular performers were unable to attend leaving the job to just 6 Breakers and with over 800 triathletes and 20 clubs in our Division (4), we felt like lambs to the slaughter!
We woke up to near freezing conditions but luckily beautiful clear skies. Waiting on the cold sand with bare feet did nothing for our circulation. The first wave kicked off at 7am. The 1km swim was good in fact it was warmer in than out. The new 30km cycle course was so much better with the removal of the 2 nasty climbs which had Nerida swearing up and own each hill in previous years. When it came to using our legs after the ride the majority of us felt that our race was over. With no feeling in our feet how was it possible to run without falling over? Funnily enough Cara was used to this feeling and for the rest of us a totally new experience. After the first 4km lap our feet thawed and returned to some sort of normality. The new run course was incredibly scenic with beautiful views of the waterways. It was a nice distraction and to our astonishment we all finished!
On the Saturday night the results were announcement and the Breakers came 5th in div 4. What an outstanding achievement for the 6 dedicated athletes.
