Oh, what a pity this event didn’t have any points up for grabs for the North Coast Interclub League – we smashed it!
The Breakers took a team of 13 to the second Kingy Tri of the season. 10 competing in the sprint, 1 in the Olympic and 2 in the Olympic teams. Bogi’s partner Sevi was also doing his first ever triathlon and was in the Tempta.

Unusually for the Kingy Tri, the weather forecast was pretty good - a bit of sun, not too hot and possibility of a shower. And that is what we got. The day almost started very badly for Bogi and Sevi who had misread the athletes guide and got to transition 1 minute after it was supposed to have closed. Fortunately, the transition manager’s bark was worse than their bite and they were allowed to rack their bikes.
The sprint was off first. The swim is down Cudgen Creek and we are normally helped by an outgoing tide. Unfortunately, the timing of this year’s event meant we got very little assistance. The race start was delayed 20 minutes for some reason (although there was mention of the S word) and then the men raced off first through the rolling start line. The water was crystal clear which made for a scenic and enjoyable float downstream. Those competing in the Olympic started slightly later and twice the distance upstream, so they got a little more help from the outgoing tide. The cycle leg is flat and generally quite fast, and the southerly was not strong enough to cause too many problems. It’s a 2-lap course for the sprint and 4 for the Olympic. The run leg is an out-and-back course. It is one of my favourites because of the variation of the surfaces and the winding nature of the route, as it goes along the river and then out to the sea wall before heading to the finish line. It was 1 lap for the sprint and 2 for the Olympic.
The Breakers had a very successful day with no mishaps, everyone coming in the top 10 in their age category and 8 podium placings (3 first places, 4 second places and 1 third place).
Special mentions….
This was Jaime and Joana's final race in Australia before embarking on the next chapter of their lives in Germany. Eager to leave a lasting impression, they certainly did. Jaime finished 8th overall in the Sprint and took 1st in his age group, clocking an impressive 18:27 for the 5km run. Joana was determined to make her mark as well, achieving a personal best in her run and finishing in the top 10 of a very competitive age group.
Annie thoroughly enjoyed the lack of waves in the creek and got her first podium finish coming 2nd in her age group.
Lindie’s focused improvement on the bike over the past 2 months really paid off, achieving an impressive average speed of 32.7 km/hr over the 40km and getting her first podium finish, coming 2nd in her age group in the Olympic.
Fastest swimmer of the day was Andy (what a surprise!) who clocked a slight tide- assisted, but still very impressive 1:12 min/100m for the 1.5km Olympic swim which delighted the waiting queen of cycling, Bea.
Sevi’s introduction to the sport was a resounding success and he came 1st in his age group in the Tempta. Next step is surely to join the Breakers and compete in the sprint at the Byron Bay Tri!
Thanks to Deb for volunteering to be the lead-out-rider for the all the events. I suspect now she knows how fast the fastest young guns run (20km/hr), she’ll take her tri bike next time and not her MTB.
