Breaker Bowling Series 2023/2024 - Round 1

With the warm-up (aka Yamba Triathlon) complete, we could focus on the main event of the season, Game 1 of the 2023/2024 Breaker Bowling Series. And it didn’t disappoint. This was the first of 3 games in the series. Game 2 will be at South West Rocks after the Trial Bay triathlon in February. And time permitting, we will organise a 3rd and final game in Ballina at the end of the season. There were 14 Breakers who put their name down for Game 1 and we were also joined by Wyatt.

Just a reminder that the coveted Byron Breaker Bowler of the Year trophy is currently held by Nick (he keeps quiet about this so you may not know) and is awarded to the bowler with the highest points at the end of the series. Points are awarded on the same basis as the NSW Interclub Triathlon series, i.e. 2 points for 1st place, 1.5 for 2nd and 3rd, 1 for 4th and 5th and 0.5 points for 6th to 10th. There were 3 teams in this game (in bowling order):

Team 1

Team 2

Team 3

John

Huw

Nick

Becky

Darren

Sandra

Jaime

Nerida

Wyatt

Robyn

Aoife

Dave

Pete

Gracie

Joana

In the first set at Yamba, Huw scored the top score with 140, closely followed by Darren on 136 and Nick on 121. Team 2 won the first set. Huw subsequently started celebrating a tad early and, as the level of beer in his glass got lower, so did his scores. On the other hand, Nick stuck with water and combined this with lengthy prayers to the bowling gods, each time he bowled. And it worked. He got 2 strikes in his first 2 bowls of set 2 and scored the joint-top score with 133.

Dave “playing the long game” Mildren was just starting to warm up and finished set 2 also with 133 points. No doubt if we’d had a third set he would have been in his stride and would have scored over 150.

Jaime was not far behind in third place with 131 points. The overall winner of this game was Nick with a total of 254 points just beating Darren on 252. Huw came in third with 247. Gracie and Nerida were both vying for the wooden spoon – but in the end Nerida decided she liked the gutters slightly more and took home the coveted award. Team 3 convincingly won set 2 which propelled them to gold medal position for the game.
