Race Report: Kingscliff November 2025 by Huw Jones
The Kingscliff (“Kingy”) Triathlon was the first event in the NSW Triathlon North Coast Interclub League for the 2025/2026 season, and the Breakers fielded a large team for the event, with 18 members participating.
It was fantastic to welcome 2 of our newest members to racing with the Breakers, Sophie and Karen, who completed her first ever triathlon.
For those who competed at last year’s 2 events, the weather forecast was typical Kingy. Rain, rain and more rain…and wind. Thankfully the rain largely held off, but the 30km/h north-westerly looked to make the cycle leg a wee bit more challenging for us all. We all had an early start to the day to make cut-off in transition, which closed at 6am. They ran the kid’s event first, followed by the Sprint, so most of us had 90 minutes to wait before we started. Ah well, plenty of time for a caffeine hit and queuing for last minute weight loss activities.
For those who have never done the Kingy event, it has one of the most enjoyable swims, as it is in the river, and we normally head downstream on an outgoing tide. So, this meant a 750m walk up the river to the start. Assembled for the start I looked out at the swimmers warming up in the water and saw a man I didn’t recognize in a Byron Tri suit. Pointing him out, I asked Deb and she responded with “Byron”. I said “Yes, but that person, who is he?” “Byron” she said. At this point I realised all the pressure of the Worlds had finally caught up with Deb and she was having a “funny turn”. But no; it turns out his name is Byron, for reals! More bizarrely he’s not a member of the club. So, I made it my mission that every time I saw him on the course to shout “IMPOSTER GET IT OFF”. I suspect people around me just thought there was a guy competing with an interesting Russian sounding name.
It was a rolling start, with the men off first, going 3 at a time into the water. This was an unusually kind gesture by the organisers, as it meant the women benefited from that little bit extra help with a faster flowing outgoing tide. The water was a good “Three Bears” temperature. Not too cold and not too warm. Just right. And the rolling start worked well by spreading out the field so there was very little congestion to contend with. The swim was beautifully fast, taking around 3 minutes less time than a normal 750m. Then out at the boat ramp, a 300m jog through transition and to our bikes.
The fastest breaker in transition 1 (T1) was Jaime with a speedy 2:02 minutes, followed very closely by Will with 2:03 minutes.
The ride started by going directly north-west, straight into the wind which warmed up the legs more quickly than usual. We then turned west and finally south to the far turn around. Then it was back along the same route to enjoy the wind-assisted return ride back towards the start. The sprinters completed 2 laps of the course.
The fastest breakers in transition 2 (T2) were jointly Will and Wyana with a blistering 1.09 minutes.
Tip to everyone: Compare your T1 and T2 transition times against the fastest Breakers above and practice reducing them. It is truly the quickest and easiest way to shave off a chunk of time. If you’re not sure how, ask one of the quickies to demo what they do.
Note to Will: What’s your secret Will?
The run is an out and back course heading up the riverside board walk, across the river and along to the end of the spit. It’s very picturesque and I’m sure we could have enjoyed it more if our heartrates weren’t maxing out. As you head back, the route diverts to the end of the break wall to a turn around. It’s then about 600m (or 1.5 laps of the Cav Centre!) across undulating grass and past the Breakers marquee to the finish line to cheers and adulation. Then into the recovery area to cheer on the rest of the Breakers, gorge on the peaches and ice-cream served by the vollies and catch up with mates from other clubs.
Kingy was another very successful event for the Breakers with 14 members on the podium. We got 4 first places, 7 second places and 3 thirds, and absolutely dominated the F60-64 category taking out the first 4 places.
Congratulations to Karen for completing their first triathlon – and appearing to enjoy it😊. Karen came an amazing 4th in her age category.
Special mentions also must go to Jaime for coming 9th overall, and Kiva for being the 3rd fastest runner on the day with a scorching 17:51 mins for the 5K.
A few other mentions…
For Mick for getting on the podium for the second time and this time in front of Team Breakers. On ya Mick.
For Joana who continues to improve in leaps and bounds and is so close to the podium coming 4th in her age group at her favourite event.
For Caz who's training has improved enormously and has performed exceptionally well, building on her experience from World Champs in October.
For Gracie, our resident QLD member, who hasn’t done any swim training because she “doesn’t like it” and still came 3rd in her age group.
for Kylie who'd rather not compete individually, but always demonstrates incredible team spirit and joined the Tweed Valley Tri Club who scored a well-deserved place on the podium.
A few virtual awards.......
Award for “transition King/Queen” goes to Will with a combined T1+T2 of only 3:12 minutes. Now that’s quick. I can only think he’s wearing his bike helmet and shoes during the swim.
Award for “having way too much fun” goes to Deb (look at the photos), with Sophie a very close second.
Award for “way too fast” goes to Kiva
Award for “most accident prone” goes yet again to Pete. Note: He did not, I repeat did not, have a fall.
Award for “now that was close” goes to Huw for coming just 1 second ahead of 2nd place in his age category. And proves that every second does count so practice those transitions!
